Location: Charlotte, NC Overview: This project involved the abandonment of an existing large-diameter waterline as part of the Charlotte WYE development, which will support construction of a new rail line. Due to site conditions and project economics, abandoning the line in place provided a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to full excavation and replacement. Challenge: The 64-inch waterline was located in an area where excavation and traditional backfill would have been disruptive and costly. In addition, groundwater was present along the alignment, creating the risk of water infiltrating the pipe before and during grouting operations. Managing groundwater was critical to ensuring a successful abandonment. Solution: RyanGeo placed 220 cubic yards of 33 pcf Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC) to abandon the 64-inch waterline. To address groundwater challenges, a temporary well was constructed along the pipe alignment to control water levels during placement. The lightweight, highly flowable nature of LDCC allowed the pipe to be filled efficiently while minimizing external loads and eliminating the need for excavation. Results: Total Volume Placed: 220 cubic yards Material: 33 pcf Low-Density Cellular Concrete Pipe Size: 64-inch waterline Key Benefit: Cost-effective abandonment supporting future rail infrastructure
