Location: Charlotte, NC Overview: This project supported the construction of a new building adjacent to an existing structure at Christ Church. Due to the proximity of the new construction, mitigation of lateral earth pressures against the existing foundation wall was required to address foundation concerns and protect the integrity of the existing building during and after construction. Challenge: The existing foundation wall was subject to increased lateral soil pressures resulting from the adjacent new construction. The solution needed to reduce pressures without adding structural load or causing disruption to the existing building. Conventional backfill materials would have increased lateral forces and posed constructability challenges within the constrained site conditions. Solution: Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC) was selected as the engineered backfill due to its lightweight properties, flowability, and ability to be placed in controlled lifts. RyanGeo placed 225 cubic yards of 30pcf LDCC in three lifts directly against the existing foundation wall, effectively reducing lateral earth pressures while maintaining precise placement and quality control throughout the operation. Results: Total Volume Placed: 225 cubic yards Placement Method: Three controlled lifts
