Location: Greenville, NC Overview: This project involved the rerouting, replacement, and upsizing of the existing stormwater drainage system serving the Greenville Public Works Facility to improve long-term performance and reliability. Challenge: A portion of the project corridor ran adjacent to a local cemetery, with the deteriorated large-diameter stormwater pipe located directly along the property line. Mature trees, established landscaping, and proximity to grave sites made full pipe removal both costly and potentially disruptive. In addition, the advanced deterioration of the pipe raised concerns about potential voids developing beneath and alongside the existing stormwater pipe. Solution: Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC) was selected as the abandonment material due to its high flowability and ability to fill irregular void spaces without excavation. Leveraging RyanGeo’s capability to pump LDCC at production rates of 200 cubic yards per hour, 500 linear feet of 84-inch diameter stormwater pipe was successfully abandoned. Given the size of the pipe, RyanGeo worked closely with the General Contractor to design a bulkhead system that allowed the abandonment to be completed efficiently in two controlled lifts. Results: Total Volume Placed: 675 cubic yards Average Cast Density: 29.39 pcf
