Location: Newton-Conover, NC Overview: This project involved the abandonment of a deteriorated stormwater system located beneath the football field at Newton-Conover High School. The work was completed with minimal surface disruption, allowing the facility to remain intact while addressing critical underground infrastructure issues. Challenge: The existing 54-inch stormwater pipe extended beneath the high school football field, making traditional removal disruptive, time-consuming, and costly. Once onsite, additional failing pipe was identified, requiring the scope to expand rapidly without impacting schedule or site operations. Solution: Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC) was selected to abandon the stormwater system due to its flowability and ability to be placed without excavation. RyanGeo initially abandoned 475 linear feet of 54-inch diameter pipe. Leveraging RyanGeo’s ability to rapidly adapt to changing site conditions, an additional 275 linear feet of 54-inch pipe was incorporated into the scope with only one day’s notice. In a single day, 440 cubic yards of 30 pcf LDCC was placed, fully filling the stormwater system and eliminating the need for pipe removal beneath the field. Results: Total Pipe Abandoned: 750 linear feet of 54-inch stormwater pipe Total Volume Placed: 440 cubic yards of 30 pcf LDCC Production Rate: Completed in one day Schedule Savings: Eliminated more than three weeks of work compared to traditional pipe removal methods
