Location: Rock Hill, SC Overview: This project involved the abandonment of an existing wet well at the Wildcat Creek Pump Station. Due to the depth and confined nature of the structure, a specialized infill solution was required to complete the abandonment safely and efficiently. Challenge: The wet well extended two stories below grade, making the placement of traditional backfill materials impractical. Conventional flowable fill also presented concerns related to excessive loading on interior walls during placement and the potential for long-term settlement. The solution needed to provide uniform support while minimizing structural loads within the confined space. Solution: Low-Density Cellular Concrete (LDCC) was selected as the infill material due to its lightweight properties and high flowability. RyanGeo placed 180 cubic yards of 27pcf LDCC in three controlled lifts over three days, achieving a total fill height of 12 feet. The staged placement allowed loads to be managed effectively while ensuring complete encapsulation of the wet well. Results: Total Volume Placed: 180 cubic yards of 27 pcf LDCC Placement Height: 12 feet in three lifts Installation Duration: Three days Schedule Savings: Reduced overall installation time by several weeks compared to traditional backfill and compaction methods
