Owner: City of Charlotte Location: Charlotte, NC Overview: This project involved emergency roadway repairs along Westinghouse Boulevard following a water main break that caused the loss of bridge abutment fill. Rapid stabilization was required to reopen the roadway safely and minimize traffic disruptions. Challenge: The washout removed a significant volume of abutment backfill, compromising roadway support and placing the adjacent slope protection slab at risk. Traditional flowable fill would have imposed higher lateral pressures, limiting lift heights and slowing the repair process. The project required a solution that could restore support quickly without overstressing adjacent structural elements. Solution: RyanGeo utilized 30 pcf Cellular Concrete to replace the washed-out abutment fill. Due to its significantly lower unit weight compared to traditional flowable fill, cellular concrete reduced pressure on the slope protection slab and allowed for increased lift heights and greater placement volumes. This approach accelerated construction while maintaining structural stability. Results: Material: 30 pcf Cellular Concrete Application: Bridge abutment fill replacement Schedule Impact: Roadway reopened several weeks ahead of schedule Key Benefit: Faster repair with reduced lateral pressure on adjacent structures
